英國詩人郝思曼(A. E.
Housman, 1859-1936),曾就讀牛津大學,但因未通過考試而未獲學位,離校後,任英國專利局官員。其後,閒暇之時,苦研古典文學有成,終得出任牛津及劍橋大學拉
丁文 教授。其詩作文字簡潔,但帶有幻滅感,哀愁中又時而幽默,極富感染力。
When I was one
and twenty
(當我二十一歲)即郝思曼傑作,對於年輕人追求戀愛的熱情與挫折,有非常巧妙的描寫,值得一再品賞、玩味。
【原詩】
When I was
one-and-twenty
I heard a wise man say,
"Give crowns and pounds and guineas
But not your heart away;
Give pearls away and rubies
But keep your fancy free."
But I was one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to me.
When I was one-and-twenty
I heard him say again,
"The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain;
'Tis paid with sighs aplenty
And sold for endless rue."
And I am two-and-twenty
And oh, 'tis true, 'tis true.

當我二十一歲,
聽到一位智者說:
「銀幣、英鎊、金幣皆可拋,
